Google’s Live Caption, on supported Android phones, captions “media like videos, podcasts, phone calls, video calls, and audio messages” on the phone itself, and Google says captions are “never stored”; on Pixel 6 and later it can translate them. Tingdong for Android listens through the microphone instead, so it does not caption a video or a call on the same phone. It captions the people around you, at a meeting, a lecture or a face-to-face conversation, in the original and in your language, and saves each session on your phone. It needs an internet connection. Google’s facts are from its help page, read 24 October 2026.

Where a row says on the phone or without a connection, that is Google’s or Samsung’s feature: Tingdong runs recognition and translation on a streaming speech service, not on your phone, so it needs an internet connection. Why we made that trade is on one page: why not on the device, and why it costs money.

Which one should you use?

Pick Live Caption if the sound plays on your phone: a video, a podcast, a voice message or a call. Live Caption runs on the phone and keeps working with no connection once its language pack is downloaded. Pick Tingdong if the speech is in the room with you, at a meeting, a lecture or a talk with someone who speaks another language, and you want it translated into your language and saved as a transcript.
