What each one can and cannot do, checked against the vendor’s own documentation. Accurate, fast, simultaneous — the translation starts before the sentence ends. Short answer: these are two different jobs. ChatGPT’s voice mode is a conversation with an assistant — you speak to it, it answers you. Tingdong never talks to you: it listens to someone else, or to whatever your Mac is playing, and puts the translation on screen or into your ear while they are still talking. If you want a patient partner to rehearse a language with, ask an assistant. If you want to follow a film, a meeting or a phone call in a language you do not speak, you want a listener.
| ChatGPT voice | Tingdong | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is for | Talking with an assistant | Understanding other people and media in another language |
| Pacing | Conversation turns. Live can listen while it speaks; Standard transcribes your speech first, then answers | Continuous: the translation starts before the sentence ends |
| Can it caption audio your Mac is playing? | Not described. Voice listens through your microphone; screen sharing exists only in Advanced on iOS and Android | Yes — Netflix, YouTube, any player, any meeting app |
| Can it interpret a real phone call? | Not described (CarPlay is for talking to ChatGPT while driving, not for your calls) | Yes — an iPhone call handed to the Mac over Bluetooth, both directions |
| Languages | No count published. You set a preferred language, and can ask it to speak another one | 60+, any pair, source language auto-detected |
| Translation read aloud | Its answers are spoken, in nine voices (two more in Brazil); text of the reply shows in the chat | Yes, in any of the 60+ languages |
| Speaker separation in a group | “Designed primarily for one-on-one conversation … not yet optimized for conversations with multiple speakers” | Yes — speakers are kept apart in the transcript |
| Price | Free: limited. Plus: 3 h per rolling 24 h. Pro: 15 h at $100/month, unlimited at $200/month | $4.99/month after a free trial; no account needed to try it |
| Platforms | iOS, Android, web; desktop app on macOS and Windows | macOS 15 or later only |
| Where processing runs | Their cloud. Live and Advanced keep audio clips with the transcript for 30 days; Standard deletes audio after transcription | Our cloud — real-time recognition, audio never stored. No offline mode |
Where a row says on-device or offline: Tingdong runs recognition and translation on a dedicated streaming engine, not on your Mac. Why that is the trade we chose — model size, 60+ auto-detected languages, simultaneous pacing — is on one page: why not on-device, and why it costs money.
Pick ChatGPT voice — or Gemini Live, or any other voice assistant — when you want to talk to something: ask questions, rehearse a language, get a word explained. Pick Tingdong when nobody is talking to you on purpose: the film that has no subtitles in your language, the standup where three people interrupt each other, the supplier on the phone. Where we are weaker: we are Mac-only, we need a network, and we do not answer questions — we only translate what is being said.
Not as a documented feature. OpenAI’s help centre (read 2026-09-15) describes Voice as listening through your microphone, with video or screen sharing only in Advanced on iOS and Android; it does not describe capturing audio another app is playing. You could hold your Mac up to a phone, but that is a conversation with an assistant, not captions. Tingdong captions any audio your Mac plays, in 60+ languages, at the pace of speech.
Direction and timing. An assistant is a turn: you speak, it answers. A live translator is a stream: someone else speaks, and the translation appears while they are still speaking. In Tingdong, recognition and translation run as one continuous stream, so the translation starts before the sentence ends.
The same distinction applies: it is an assistant you talk to. We have not verified its current feature list from Google’s own pages, so we make no claims about it here. Our claim is only about what Tingdong does: continuous translation of any audio your Mac plays, plus interpretation of real phone calls.
Because every ChatGPT cell is taken from OpenAI’s own help centre as read on 2026-09-15, and a cell says “not described” where their page says nothing rather than carrying a guess. Our own column is checkable in the first free minute after you install the app — and our weaknesses (Mac-only, cloud recognition, no offline mode) are in the table too.
